A librarian's list of great reads for winter break

What do "Harry Potter," "The Baby-Sitters Club" and "Guinness World Records" have in common?

They are all books that Madeline Helser-Howard, youth services manager for the St. Helena branch of the Beaufort County Library, suggests that kids check-out over their winter school break.

"We have something for everyone at the library," Helser-Howard said. "Finding a good book to read is a good way to get kids away from spending their break playing video games and watching TV."

The St. Helena Branch is also running a Winter Reading Program to encourage children to read more. The event starts Saturday and will run until Jan. 16.

The goal is to get children to read for three hours. For every hour they read, they can go to the library to get a free prize. Reading maps to help families keep track of time spent reading can be picked up at the library. Children who read for three hours can turn in their reading map to get a free book.

Beaufort County libraries will be closed for the holidays from Dec. 24-26 and will close at 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
