Lucas: Hilton Head’s‘Big Read’ wrap-up event to feature jazz-age themed party, swing dancing, food and music

All those who have been participating in The Big Read through the Beaufort County Public Library, or those who just enjoy good music, will want to check out its closing event this weekend.

The Big Read Wrap-up is 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at Ruby Lee’s, 46 Old Wild Horse Road on Hilton Head Island.

Over the course of the month, readers have been participating in the program centered on Zora Neale Hurston’s novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God.”

Saturday’s event will feature a jazz-age themed party, swing dancing, food and drinks and musical performances by vocalist Marlena Smalls and pianist Lavon Stevens.

Jazz age attire is encouraged.

Tickets are $45 and include dinner and a book by Zora Neale Hurtson. Taxes are not included.
