Lucas: Hilton Head group brings back 'Second Sunday' film series
Longtime Hilton Head Island resident Marion Conlin remembers when the second Sunday of every month at Coligny Theatre was the place to be, especially if you were a serious film lover.
"It was very popular," Conlin said of the defunct 'Second Sunday Film Series' which started sometime in the '80s.
The series, formed by a local membership-based film society with the same name, ran throughout the '90s and showed a wide range of films from foreign to art house to documentaries.
"It showed a lot of really interesting films," Conlin said.
The series eventually died out after organizers fell ill or moved away. Now a new group of movie buffs want to bring it back and in doing so, hope to do some good in the process.
"We have a fabulous little art theater," Conlin said. "So the idea is to utilize it to benefit the community a lot more than maybe we have been."
Calling themselves the Second Sunday Film Series committee, the group is made of about 10 members including islanders who love movies and Coligny Plaza merchants who'd like to bolster the arts and support local nonprofit groups.
Conlin, who is co-chairing the group along with Blaine Lotz, said they plan to show a lot of the same kind of films as the original series.
"But we are starting out a little different than they did," she said. "We'll be doing a double feature on Sunday afternoons."
In addition, the new initiative will work to fund a community nonprofit group. All proceeds from the series for the first year will go toward Habitat for Humanity's The Glen, an affordable housing development in the works off Marshall Road on Hilton Head.
A member of the original Second Sunday film society, Conlin said the group don't know if the new film series will be a success but hope to build a community of film lovers and theater goers once again.
An avid researcher, she and members of the group are looking around at what other film festivals and independent theaters are showing for ideas.
In addition, the group has a list of more than 50 films that were part of the original series so fans may see a few that originally ran.
"I'm hoping that lots of people who truly love movies will enjoy being part of this," she said. "We can not only have a good time at the movies but recognize it is a cultural event and a benefit to the community."
