Dance Theatre of Harlem to bring legacy of ballet legends to Hilton Head
The Dance Theatre of Harlem will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 1-2 at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, 14 Shelter Cove Lane on Hilton Head Island.
The dance company began with Arthur Mitchell, who was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet under George Balanchine and the first African-American to be a permanent member of a major U.S. ballet company. In 1969, Mitchell and his mentor, Karel Shook, founded Dance Theatre of Harlem for the youth in the underprivileged neighborhood where Mitchell grew up.
Dance Theatre of Harlem Company tours nationally and internationally and continues Mitchell’s mission with the Dance Theatre of Harlem School, which trains more than 500 students per year in ballet and other dance disciplines, as well as Dancing Through Barriers, an arts education and community engagement program.
Tickets are $71.
