Hilton Head author publishes book to comfort the soul

A Hilton Head Island woman will be releasing her book, “Still Before the Dawn,” filled with inspirational thoughts in poem form, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Spanish Wells Clubhouse.

Author Jody Bennett Reichel has saved many journals and hundreds of loose scraps of paper containing her notes of encouragement to various friends and family members — and sometimes even to herself — written over the past several years. She said many of these little poems are prayers for friends and family members; she wrote whatever God put in her heart, often at 4 a.m. Each page holds a watercolor illustration by Lucy McTier, who Reichel said truly captured some precious moments woven into the book.

One of her favorite sections of the book is the part labeled “Friendship,” in a flowing script. Reichel wrote this part for a friend whose mother had just passed away, she said. It speaks on friends surrounding her mourning friend “like flowers” to bring her peace and help her through the difficult time. It’s something with which anyone suffering a loss can identify, she said.

Above all, Reichel wants her readers to be encouraged and comforted when reading her book. “I want them to feel soothed, to find calm in their troubled world,” she said. She found peace in the writing of the book; “It brings me comfort, too.” As she filled up her journals, Reichel said, she was able to pray for her friends and family in a way that was therapeutic and helped her find peace through communicating with God.
