“Everything, everywhere, all at once!”… one more time!

It’s never too early to seek out the new year’s cultural arts opportunities in the greater Lowcountry and beyond. This year’s variety of events are so phenomenally diverse, they will simply stop you in your tracks. Look forward to experiencing live music, theater, documentaries, exhibitions, celebrations and even more.

What a year this will be, but more to our immediate cultural possibilities, what a February is in store for all of us!

August Wilson’s “Fences”

Set in 1957, “Fences” is brilliant and spellbinding with a natural sense of humor that explores the life of Troy Maxson. A former Negro League baseball star, Troy now is a working-class man providing for his family. Facing thwarted aspirations, Troy attempts to control his wife and his son, who now wants his own chance to play ball. Fences explores the walls we build around ourselves and our loved ones, while also illuminating one family’s struggles during this era.

Disney’s “Tarzan”

A troupe of 45 talented students will take audiences on a thrilling jungle adventure in this musical performance.

Love for Lean, a No Tie “Fun-raiser”

Join Lean Ensemble favorites Matt Mundy and Peggy Trecker White, along with newcomers Daniel Robert Sullivan and music director Jacob Yates as they offer a variety of soul stirring, funny and gorgeous musical selections. The $150 ticket for “Love for Lean” includes cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, buffet dinner, live entertainment and a few Valentine surprises!

SEA GLASS STAGE COMPANY

Sea Glass Soiree and Fundraiser and “Tick, Tick... Boom!”

Sea Glass Stage Company will kick off its residency at Coligny Theater with the Sea Glass Soiree, a musical fundraiser featuring the jazz band Folderol, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, giveaways and themed gift basket raffles. The company’s inaugural production will be Jonathan Larson’s “Tick, Tick… Boom!” a musical crowd-pleaser from the creator of “Rent.”

MAY RIVER THEATRE COMPANY

“Calendar Girls”

The production is based on the Miramax motion picture by Juliette Towhidi and Tim Firth. When Annie’s husband John dies of leukemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow Women’s Institute members to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar, with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence. The news spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village.

“Heart to Heart”

The exhibit is a collaboration between the Artists of Sea Pines and Hilton Head Plantation Artists’ Association. Paintings, photographs, sculpture and stained glass will be on display.

Freedom Day is a very special time of reflection for the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. It commemorates the signing of the resolution that proposed the 13th Amendment. Mountainfilm on Tour

Mountainfilm on Tour Hilton Head provides a selection of culturally rich, adventure-packed and inspiring documentary films curated from the Telluride Mountainfilm Festival in Colorado. Matinee is family-oriented and the evening event includes hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction.

March Forth registration

The eighth annual March Forth, scheduled for March 2 and March 3, is a special event commemorating the anniversary of Pat Conroy’s death on March 4, 2016, with programs on major themes of his writing and teaching life, including social justice, inclusivity, conservation, education and storytelling. Free and ticketed events are planned at several venues.
