USCB Indie Film Series presents 6 unique movies in July
No doubt "Dark Knight Rises" and "The Amazing Spider-Man" will be easy to come across in Beaufort County theaters this summer. But what about movies that might be just as good but not as well-known, such as "Quill: The Life of a Guide Dog" or "First Position"?
The University of South Carolina Beaufort Center for the Arts has ramped up its Indie Film Series, showing more movies during the summer.
The series started as a chance to showcase some of those films that still have an audience locally but might be forced out at the larger movie theaters by summer blockbusters, said Center for the Arts director Bonnie Fuller.
"The closest art house theater we have here is Coligny (Theatre on Hilton Head Island) or perhaps the Terrace Theatre in Charleston," she said.
The center selects its films from Emerging Pictures, which delivers independent film and cultural programming via a digital data line. So far, the film series has found receptive audiences in kid-friendly fare, documentary and foreign language films, Fuller said. Look for the series to continue if successful this summer.
