Beaufort native and 2 writers talk poetry, scary ‘campfire stories’ in new podcast
Crime, spooks and gore. This is what writers Kenneth Macintosh and Peter Lehmkuhl and local podcaster Danetia Madison are looking to feature in their new podcast “Tales.”
“Campfire stories are usually of the spooky sense, so that’s the kind of stories we’re looking for,” Madison said.
The “Tales” podcast premiered on Dec. 24 and featured Lehmkuhl’s short story called “Screaming Greetings,” inspired by Edgar Allen Poe. The show’s website described it as a “Christmas Tale with a pleasant twist that will make you think twice about being naughty over nice.”
“Tales” is the second podcast for Madison, a former Marine and City of Beaufort Police Department officer, and a first for both Lehmkuhl and Macintosh. Madison’s first podcast, “Partners N Crime,” talks about true crime and the paranormal and has listeners from 13 countries, she said.
“Tales” got its start after Macintosh reached out to Madison on Instagram with samples of his writing. After reading them, Madison reached out to her friend, Lehmkuhl, who had recently published a Kindle e-book under the pseudonym Peter Gunn. New episodes of “Tales” will premiere monthly and will revolve around the major holiday for that month, Madison said.
“Most of the stories will have a scary, spooky feel,” Madison said. “It’s not going to be happy-go-lucky like somebody gets hit by an arrow and falls in love. They’ll fall in love, but it’s going to be a different type of ending than you would want from a Valentine’s Day story.”
The writing styles featured on the podcast will be unique, Madison said, and will have their own rhythm.
Lehmkuhl, who retired from the Air Force in early December, said he uses his style of writing to bring beauty into the world.
“I think there’s some beautiful poetry that people look over and are not willing to listen to necessarily,” Lehmkuhl said. “If you bring it into the form of a story, they get more engrossed in it.”
For “Tales,” both Madison and Lehmkuhl hope to be able to help people and feature the voices of new and aspiring writers.
“I just want people to enjoy a good story,” Lehmkuhl said.
Submissions for the podcast can be sent by email to parnerncrime2021@gmail.com. You can find both “Tales” and “Partners N Crime” by searching for the Tommy Boy Productions shows on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and other podcast apps.
