Ahoy! Take a sneak peek at Hilton Head’s newest playground in the Coligny area

Hilton Head Island’s Coligny-area park is a few months away from opening, and its most recent addition is nearly seaworthy.

Construction crews on the Lowcountry Celebration Park, located off Pope Avenue, have completed a stunning children’s playground. It was built in the form of a ship, and is named “The Adventure” playground.

The playground is named for the vessel that explorer Capt. William Hilton used to travel to Hilton Head Island in 1663. He sailed the Adventure from Barbados to explore new lands and named Hilton Head after a headland near the entrance to Port Royal Sound, according to the town.

A video released by the town features videography by Gustavo Rattia and a soundtrack from local musician Frederick Freon.

The Lowcountry Celebration Park, which island leaders hope will become as iconic as the Sea Pines tree house playground, is set to open Oct. 2, 2020.

The park will also feature a lagoon, boardwalks with educational signs, The Sandbox Children’s Museum, restrooms, an outdoor event space and parking. A new traffic light at Lagoon Road has been installed to help get people into the park and the Coligny Beach parking lot.

It was originally planned to be open by May, but park construction was delayed due to the coronavirus, according to Scott Liggett, director of public projects and facilities. The pandemic meant delayed material deliveries and a reduced number of people working.

The budget for the project is $12 million, but Liggett said the final costs are likely to be around $14.1 million. It’s being funded by taxes from a special tax district that includes the Coligny Plaza area.
