Shark sighting: This 1,000-pound big boy swimming off coast of Myrtle Beach
Webster the shark is paying the Grand Strand a visit.
The Great White shark was tracked off the coast of Myrtle Beach on Friday.
Webster, a 1,008 pound adult male measuring more than 12 feet long, pinged near the coastal city at 10:46 a.m. Oct. 24, 2025. A ping happens when an animal tag breaks the surface of the water, sending data, according to OCEARCH, a global non-profit which conducts research and tracks sharks.
Webster’s tracking off the Myrtle Beach coast falls in line with this time of year when sharks typically move south for the winter.
Webster was tagged in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, on Sept. 29, 2025. He is named for David Webster, a World War II soldier, shark enthusiast and author of “Myth and Maneater: The Story of the Shark,” according to OCEARCH. Tragically, David Webster lost his life at sea.
