SHANNON QUALIFIES FOR REGIONAL MEET

Sports Academy Sparklers' Hannah Shannon finished fifth in the all-around competition and won a silver medal on the balance beam at the South Carolina Optional State Gymnastics Championships held March 21-23 at the Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia.

Shannon set team records on the uneven parallel bars and in the all-around while qualifying for the Level 9 regional meet, which will be held April 11-13 in Kennesaw, Ga. Shannon, 17, placed fourth on vault, seventh on floor exercise and eighth on the bars.

This will be Shannon's third trip to the Region 8 competition, where a top-six placing would send her to the USA Gymnastics Level 9 Eastern Championships on May 2-4 in Bradenton, Fla.

LOCAL JUNIOR TENNIS PLAYERS REACH FINALS

Beaufort's Alex Angus and Marco Gabbato of the Ivan Lendl International Junior Tennis Academy made the finals in their respective divisions of the Rockbridge Junior Tennis Classic, held March 22-24 in Columbia.

Gabbato, from Yonkers, N.Y., won his first two matches to make the finals in the Boys 18 division before falling to Thomas Brown of Sumter, 6-0, 6-1.

Angus made it to the championship match in the Boys 16 division but fell to Alex Sklizovic. Angus also reached the Boys 16 doubles final with partner Evan Hanner, but they were defeated by Sklizovic and his brother, Aaron Sklizovic.

The IJTA's Temugeii Enkhsaikhan, of Ulaanabaatar, Mongolia, reached the semifinals of the 14 division.

BEAUFORT VOLLEYBALL TEAM HAS STRONG FINISH

The Beaufort Volleyball Club's 12U team finished its inaugural season at the Palmetto region championship in Charlotte last weekend. The team went undefeated through the semifinals of the Open Gold division before falling in the championship match. The team made it to the finals in five of the six region tournaments it played in this year.

Team members are Jasmine Callender, Madison Gallion, Olivia Gee, Kenaisha Heyward, Dazani Hinton, Caroline Malphrus, Laiani McCullough, Hannah Merchant and Molly Smith. The team is coached by Mike Dixon and Roger Wilson.

AAU FOOTBALL TRYOUTS THIS WEEKEND

The Extra Mile Tigers Football League will be holding tryouts Saturday at Whale Branch Early College High School in Seabrook for players age 7-12. Teams will compete in an AAU tackle football league in the fall.

The tryout will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Players should bring a T-shirt, shorts, cleats and sneakers.
