The 16th annual men's Hilton Head Plantation Cup golf tournament was won for the first time by Bear Creek Golf Club, which ended a four-year winning streak by the Country Club of Hilton Head.

The two-man better ball, stroke-play competition features 10 teams and a golf professional from each of the four clubs on Hilton Head Plantation. The top seven team scores for each day are used.

Bear Creek, led by assistant professional Kirk Ridgely, posted a two-day score of 927 in the event held Sept. 14-15 at Dolphin Head Golf Club and the Country Club of Hilton Head. The Country Club of Hilton Head, led by professional Chip Pellerin, finished second with a score of 941. Dolphin Head, with assistant pro Jerry Dacus, was third with 969, and Oyster Reef Golf Club, with pro Tom Kern, was fourth at 986.

Bear Creek's Marty Crocker set a tournament record with gross daily scores of 68 and 69. Tom Vater of the Country Club had the next best round of 74.

Low one-day scores of 61 were turned in by Bear Creek's Crocker and Alex Jasper and the Country Club's Tim Rojahn and Charley Johnson. The low team net total of 127 was shared by the Bear Creek teams of Crocker and Jasper, and Mike Porter and Michael Clementi.

The low pro/member score of 63 was shot by the Country Club of Hilton Head's Pellerin and Bill McLean.
