The Sports Academy Sparklers of Beaufort hosted the USAG Level 5-10 state gymnastics championships March 25-27 at Parris Island. Nearly 500 gymnasts competed in the three-day event held at the All-Weather Training Center aboard the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

Level 8 Sports Academy Sparkler Hannah Shannon overcame two falls on beam to finish third in all-around for the 12-14C age group. She also won the bronze medal on vault and floor, and was sixth on bars. The performance qualified her for the Level 8 Region 8 Regionals, which wrap up today in Marietta, Ga. It is her second trip the Level 8 Regionals.

Hilton Head Island Gymnastics Jessica Neitzel, 15, qualified for the Level 9 Region 8 Regionals. She won the gold medal on floor and was seventh in the all-around. Kelsey Covert, 18, another Hilton Head Island Gymnastics Level 9 athlete, was one of 11 seniors recognized by the SC USAG board of directors with flowers and a plaque.

Sports Academy Sparkler Level 5 Rachel Ruth won the gold medal on vault in the 9-11G age group with a personal-best 9.2. She was sixth on beam, seventh on floor and fifth in the all-around. Vanessa Cox (9-11D) placed sixth on vault and floor, 10th on beam and ninth in the all-around. Kyleigh Easler (9-11A) placed ninth on bars, seventh on floor and 10th in the all-around. Nikki Kieff was fifth on vault, eighth on floor and ninth all-around.

Kelsey Woodruff (12-14A) won the bronze medal on floor and placed fourth on the vault. Riley Davis (12-14 B) placed sixth on vault and fifth on bars, beam and all-around. Perry Harter (12-14C) was fourth in the vault.

The team champions were: Level 9-10 -- Ocean Flippers, Gymnastics and More, Myrtle Beach; Level 8 -- Aiken Gymnastics; Level 7 -- Beach Team Tumblers, Terry and Don's, Myrtle Beach; Level 6 -- GymMasters, Mt. Pleasant.
