Recreation Briefs, Feb. 9

It's time to start getting in shape for the seventh annual Hunting Island Adventure Biathlon, presented by the Sea Island Rotary Club and scheduled for noon on March 12.

The race begins with a kayak of about six miles, followed by a trail run of about 4 1/2 miles. Participants can complete the race solo, in tandem (using a two-person kayak with both participants completing the trail run) or in a relay (one person paddles, and the other runs).

Awards will be given in each category for the top males and females, as well as the top mixed tandem and relay teams.

Those who register before the advanced deadline of March 4 will receive a discounted entry fee of $40 for a solo entry or $55 for a team. Prices increase by $10 after March 4. The first 200 participants are guaranteed race T-shirts and invited to attend the post-race party. Registration information is available at Higher Ground of the Lowcountry at 2121 Boundary St., Suite 101 in Beaufort, by calling 379-4327 or online at

A portion of proceeds from the race will go to local children's charities and to raise awareness of health and wellness in the community.
