PALMETTO DUNES TEAM TAKES 3RD AT USTA SENIOR NATIONALS

A Hilton Head Island club tennis team made an impressive run in a national tennis tournament over the weekend in California.

The Palmetto Dunes Tennis Club's 4.5 senior men's team defeated A-Budde (Minn.) to take third place in the USTA Senior League National Championship at Indian Wells, Calif., capping the best season of any men's senior team in Beaufort County.

The PDTC Islanders lost 2-1 in the semifinals to 4-Team (Va.), falling in a tiebreaker in their attempt to reach the championship match. They finished 4-1 in the tournament.

The Islanders qualified for the national tournament by winning the USTA League Southern Sectional in July and by winning the USTA League South Carolina state tournament in May.

The team consists of Steven Brady, Guenter Bergmann, John Brittis, Pat Child, Mark Sheaffer, Dana Landin, John Kerr, Gavin Cox, Keith Whitlow, Job De Boer and William Hoppe.

BLUFFTON BLAZE WIN TOURNAMENT IN GEORGIA

The Bluffton Blaze 12 and under baseball team claimed the championship of a tournament in Brunswick, Ga., over the weekend. The Blaze finished with a record of 4-0 in the tournament which featured teams from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

Members of the Blaze were: Kyle Adkins, Matthew Ball, Tristan Lowe, Connor O'Brien, Eric Foggo, Ian Foggo, Grayson Lowe, Reese Irwin, Tanner Soulia, Trenton Daily, Nick Lucchesi, Tad Zamarzly, Jacob Pollard and Copper Morgan. The team was managed by John Major. Coaches were Ryan Adkins, Kevin Morgan and Bill Ball.
