Thomas Heyward Academy will have to wait at least another week to measure its undefeated start.

The Rebels rolled again Friday, defeating Hilton Head Prep, 60-14, to improve to 8-0.

Thomas Heyward coach Nic Shuford said the previous week he wanted the Rebels to develop a killer mentality, to treat each game as if it was a playoff contest. But that can be tricky for a team winning with such ease.

"I'll give Hilton Head Prep some credit for that," Shuford said. "They made some adustments on defense and changed our blocking schemes up a little bit, and it took us awhile to get used to it."

Hilton Head Prep stiffened after halftime, outscoring the Rebels' starters 7-0 during the third quarter. Three fumbles, an interception and some big penalites slowed Thomas Heyward during its home victory.

"It was a good fight," Hilton Head Prep quarterback Charlie Wilmot said. "We didn't want to give up after halftime. We came out a little soft. I think we were a little scared or something, with the undefeated season they were having."

But the Rebels bounced back to secure the blowout, scoring three touchdowns the final 9:15, including Collin Roach's 25-yard interception return for a score.

Thomas Heyward will find out where it stands Friday, when the Rebels travel to defending SCISAA Class 2-A champion Hilton Head Christian Academy, which won Friday at Colleton Prep and hasn't lost since Week 1 against Hammond.

"We're feeling pretty confident," Rebels receiver Bryan Lee Wade said. "We want a little payback for last year, when they beat us, and the year before that. They're always a pretty good team."

Thomas Heyward running back Ryan Day and quarterback J.D. Tuten, the top rushers in the area entering this week, combined for 224 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, four scores from Day. Tuten tossed two touchdown passes to Wade.

The Rebels shoved the Dolphins' run game backwards, forcing Wilmot to look downfield much of the game. He felt the pressure, rolling out of the pocket and leaving the game briefly after a second quarter scramble left him with an injured knee.

The Dolphins quarterback attempted 40 passes. He connected with receiver Logan Clark for an 80-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, the Dolphins' only production before the outcome was out of hand.

Wilmot said Prep would continue to fight, that it wanted the trophy from rival Hilton Head Christian before the end of the season. The Dolphins' initial roster of 22 players has dwindled due to injury and other factors, Wilmot said, but the team will push forward.

"That's one thing that our guys have -- we will never give up no matter what the score is," he said. "I couldn't ask to be with a better group of guys and coaches. We're always going to hang in there and fight until the end."
