John Paul II is one of just 48 high schools nationwide to be honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association with its inaugural Team Academic Excellence Award, given to squads that exceed a “B” grade average for the past academic year.
Golden Warriors players maintained a 90.03 grade percentage during the 2015-16 academic year, while reaching the SCISA Class A playoffs in its first varsity season. JP2, coached by Pete Birmingham, was the only South Carolina high school to receive the ABCA award.
"The school and coaches are extremely proud of these young men," athletics director Matt Dakolios said.
JP2's 2016 roster includes juniors Blake Parsons and Joey Cucinotta, sophomores Daniel Creeden, Jack Jolley, Thomas Kender, Eston Parker, Brad Tigges and Mark Tigges, freshmen Josh Brenner and Nathan Dardes and eighth grader Josh Horton.
