The competitive cheerleading teams from Hilton Head Island and Beaufort high schools have qualified for the state championships.

The state championship will be held Saturday at the at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.

Hilton Head Island, coached by Megan Foy and choreographed by Michelle Hughes, finished eighth out of 24 Class 3-A teams at the state qualifier Saturday at River Bluff High School in Columbia.

Sixteen teams moved on to the finals.

Beaufort High, the defending Lower State champion coached by Corrie Zimmerman and choreographed by Jennifer Hetzel and Michele Hughes of Allstar Panther’s gym, finished 11th to advance to the final.

“I am incredibly proud of the athleticism and versatility of this year's team,” Zimmerman said in a release. “We had a few injuries, but everyone pulled together to make sure that we earned a second consecutive year at state competition.”

This year, the S.C. High School League eliminated the Lower and Upper State categories and went to a statewide qualifier.

In 4-A, there were 40 teams vying for 16 spots. Bluffton failed to qualify.

“The girls did really well, but they only took two teams from the entire Lower State,” Bluffton coach Beth Herring said.
