Hilton Head Island High School’s Bill Wrightson has been named the boys and girls 3-A Cross County Coach of the Year by the S.C. Track and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Wrightson led the Seahawks to the boys and girls Class 3-A state championships Saturday at the Sandhills Research Park in Columbia.
Both teams were repeat winners and took home their sixth title in eight years.
Wrightson, who has won the award several times, said it’s not really about him.
“Every time, it’s based on what the kids do ...,” Wrightson said. “One of my favorite Mark Twain sayings is ‘if you see a turtle on top of a fence post, you know he didn’t get there by himself.’
“I mean, certainly I had a hand in that. But they go out and do it, it’s just in my name.”
The Seahawks coach also credited Max Mayo, a longtime coach who has a hand in the Hilton Head Island program, as well.
“Years ago, he was coach of the year in Georgia. In fact years ago, he was likely coach of the year in the whole United States, I’m certain,” Wrightson said. “Max has helped me since I started here, and certainly he deserves a big piece of that as well.”
Wrightson will receive his award at the SCTCCCA Winter Meeting on Jan. 9, 2016.
