If A.C. Flora wanted a rematch of last year's Class 3-A boys tennis championship, it got its wish.
Hilton Head Island High School downed Wilson 5-2 on Thursday at Hilton Head to return to the state championship.
The Seahawks (16-9) will face A.C. Flora, a team they beat 6-0 last year, at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
"Last year, things were dictated by the seniors," said Hilton Head Island head coach Jennifer Weitekamper. "Their desire to get something they felt like they had lost in previous years. This year, no one player is above the others. They're all equal."
Matt Oliver (No. 1 singles) and Cooper Steinhour (No. 4 singles) took losses for the Seahawks. Leading 3-2 after singles play, Hilton Head was solid at No. 2 doubles, though, and the team of Matt Feldman and Sam Rothwell blanked their opponents -- Donald Mincey and Chris Nickel -- sealing the match for the Seahawks.
"We're a lot younger (team this year), but we're more experienced at the same time," Feldman said. "We've just been through tough situations."
Weitekamper said that No. 2 doubles slot could be a big deal Saturday.
"I'm a big believer that the team that wins at second doubles wins at states," Weitekamper said.
The loss was the first this season for Wilson (16-1) and coach Fred Davis. Davis said some of his players played up to their potential while others fell short.
"Hilton Head just had a better squad this year," Davis said. "We look forward to facing them next year."
Feldman, a senior, isn't looking forward to next year, just Saturday's rematch with A.C. Flora.
"We've already won," Feldman said when asked his attitude going into the final. "This is going to be an easy match, and we're going to win. That's my attitude."
