Carson Gregory vowed not to forget Friday night, even if he uses a selective memory.

The Beaufort High School pitcher was recognized along with the Eagles' other senior baseball players. Then he threw a complete-game shutout as Beaufort High defeated Bluffton High School, 1-0.

The Eagles earned the scrappy win despite a tough night on the bases. They improved to 3-2 in Region 8-AAAA and remain in contention for one of the region's top two spots.

"This wasn't the best win, but we got the job done," said Gregory, who struck out 12.

Eagles senior Louis Brown, who started at catcher, was 2 for 2 to lead Beaufort High at the plate.

Beaufort High scored its run during the third inning when Jordan Clegg reached on an error and came around to score. The potential for more runs slipped away on the bases.

Bluffton pitcher Chance Murphy picked off a pair of runners and a courtesy runner was called out at second after having run for another player earlier in the game.

But Gregory made sure the run held up.

With command of his fastball and chageup, he allowed only two hits, one of them a sixth-inning bunt. Gregory didn't allow multiple base runners during any inning and struck out the side in the fifth.

The Winthrop-bound right-hander said bullpen work after his first start against Summerville helped him come out sharp.

"He was locating," Beaufort High coach Keith Riley said. "He had them off balance tonight."

Bluffton coach Bryant Kitty declined comment and did not make his players available.

The right-hander Murphy went to first base often and picked off runners in the first and third innings. He scattered seven hits and did not allow an earned run.

"We thought we were going to come hit the kid, knock him off the mound," Clegg said. "But things just didn't go that way."

The Eagles sit third in 8-AAAA, with losses to Summerville and Ashley Ridge. The upcoming week includes games at home against Fort Dorchester and Ashley Ridge, and a game at Summerville on Wednesday.

"If we can squeeze some wins out of that, it will mess everything up," Riley said. "Hopefully we can slide into the second spot."
