Prep Roundup, March 21: Beaufort High boys get past Battery Creek, 3-1


Beaufort High 3, Battery Creek 1: Jack Gambla, Brandon Rodriguez and David Seguine scored goals to lift the Beaufort High School boys soccer team to a 3-1 win at neighbor Battery Creek on Friday night.

Goalkeeper Brooks Wilson made six saves for the Eagles (6-4-1), who play at Hilton Head Island High on Monday.

Miguel Mejia had the lone score for Battery Creek (2-2), and goalie Tristian Saunders made nine saves.

The Dolphins play Woodland at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

James Island 2, Hilton Head Island High 1: Eneo Torres scored in the first half, but two quick goals in the second half sent the Seahawks to a loss in their Region 8-AAA opener.

Goalkeeper Marlon Ascension made five saves for the Seahawks (3-3 overall, 0-1 region), who host Beaufort High on Monday.

Lars Bentley and Joao Carillo scored for James Island (6-1, 1-0).

Frederica Academy (Ga.) 3, Hilton Head Prep 0: The hosts scored in the final minute of the first half, then added two more after the break to complete the shutout against the Dolphins.

Hilton Head Prep goalkeeper Robert Clark made nine saves.

The Dolphins (3-4) travel to St. Andrew's on Tuesday.

Beaufort Academy 5, Bible Baptist 2: The Eagles got goals from five different players in the win. Jack Olsson, Drummond Koppernaes, Jack Dailey, Reyn Robinson and George Sanford scored, and goalkeeper Thibault Deneye made one save for Beaufort Academy (5-3 overall, 2-0 SCISAA Region 2-AA).

Beaufort Academy 4, Lipscomb Academy, Tenn., 2 (Thursday): Clay Melville scored twice, and Jack Olsson and George Sanford added single goals for the Eagles (4-3, 2-0 SCISSA Region 2-AA). Ashton Guest had eight saves in goal.

Hilton Head Christian 3, First Baptist 0 (Thursday): John Ross Moise sandwiched a goal between two Zach McCutchen goals, and Thomas Gloven had a shutout in goal to lead the Eagles to victory.


Hilton Head Island High 3, James Island 0: Lexi Lainhart, Rebeka Parent and Estelle Murphy scored goals as the Seahawks won their region opener.

Sam Wammock posted the shutout in net for Hilton Head High (5-1 overall, 1-0 Region 8-AAA), which plays Tuesday against Orangeburg-Wilkinson.

JV: Hilton Head Island High 1, James Island 0

Hilton Head Christian 8, Northwood Academy 0: Allison Meeder and Hannah Reynolds each scored a pair of goals to lead the Eagles to victory.

Abigail Bensch, Alyssa Lane, Audrey Bensch and Kellee Vest also scored goals. Audrey Bensch added a pair of assists, while Reynolds, Lindsey Gillis, Abigail Bensch and Meeder had one assist each.

Meaghan Gillis and Rebecca Donaldson split time in net for the shutout.

The Eagles (3-0 overall, 3-0 region) play again at 1 p.m. Saturday at Beaufort High.

Frederica Academy 3, Hilton Head Prep 0: Kate Herman made nine saves, but the Dolphins (2-3) fell to Frederica on St. Simons Island, Ga.

Prep gets back to work Tuesday at St. Andrew's in Savannah.


Hilton Head Christian 11, First Baptist 10: The Eagles rallied from a 10-5 deficit by scoring six runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead, and Logan Toomer finished out the game on the mound to seal the comeback win.

Toomer worked 3 1-3 innings in relief for the victory.

James Bartholomew led the HHCA offense, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Reese Dolyniuk was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Matt Van Grow added two RBIs, and Luke Higgs and Andy Bauer had two hits apiece.

The Eagles host Northwood Academy at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Pinewood Prep 7, Hilton Head Prep 6: The Dolphins, despite hitting the ball hard all night, suffered their first defeat of the season.

John Sheehan went 2 for 4 with an RBI, James Leonard was 1for 3 with three RBIs, and Cole Gardocki went 1 for 3 with a run for Hilton Head Prep (6-1 overall, 1-1 region), which plays Monday at Colleton Prep.

Middle school: John Paul II 11, Beaufort Academy 1


Bluffton 3, Thomas Heyward Academy 1: The Bobcats won a non-region showdown between the local softball powers, getting the victory despite only collecting two hits -- one of them a home run.

Courtney Smith held down Thomas Heyward, earning the win and registering 11 strikeouts.

Battery Creek 9, Woodland 0: Freshman pitcher Kyleigh Peeples threw a one-hitter to lead the Dolphins (2-1 Region 6-AA) to victory. Battery Creek hosts Burke on Wednesday.


Hilton Head Island High 10, Bishop England 8: Thomas Farrell had three goals and two assists, and goalie Noah Flores made 17 saves to lead the Seahawks to victory.

Tucker Roberts, Duncan Marx and Bentley Moore each had two goals and an assist, and Will Urbin added a goal and two assists for Hilton Head High (4-3), which plays at Academic Magnet on Wednesday.


Porter-Gaud 7, Hilton Head Christian 2 (Thursday): The Eagles (0-1) fell to Porter-Gaud in their season opener.
