Prep Roundup, March 23: Bluffton boys soccer team gets revenge vs. Battery Creek


Bluffton 5, Battery Creek 0: Junior Fabrizio Camera scored twice, and Akeel Crooks had a goal and an assist as the Bluffton High School boys soccer team avenged last Friday's loss to Battery Creek, shutting out the Dolphins, 5-0, on Friday night.

Sophomore Will Holland and junior Sage Cross also scored for Bluffton, and Osiel Maldonado collected two assists.

Goalkeeper Richard Snyder made four saves for Bluffton (5-4), which travels to Fort Dorchester on Tuesday.

Miguel Mejia made 18 saves for Battery Creek (4-3), which plays at Colleton County at 7 p.m. Monday.

Beaufort High 4, Ashley Ridge 3: Josh Vellucci scored a hat trick to help the Eagles prevail in a back-and-forth game at Ashley Ridge. Vellucci's three goals bring his total to 14 on the season.

David Seguine scored the other goal for Beaufort High (6-1 overall, 2-1 Region 8-AAAA), which hosts Colleton County on Tuesday.

Hilton Head Island High 2, Hanahan 0: Steven Rendon scored a goal, and Brian Ludewig scored off an assist from Blake Bishop to help the Seahawks climb back into first place in Region 8-AAA.

Stall defeated James Island on Friday to create a three-way tie for first in the region.

Conner Goulet made three saves in goal for Hilton Head High (8-2 overall, 3-1 region), which plays at Berkeley on Tuesday.

Hanahan falls to 5-2 overall, 2-2 in the region.

Hilton Head Prep 2, St. Andrew's 0: Archer Brooks and Teron Daley scored goals, and Andrew Spencer had an assist to lead the Dolphins to the shutout victory.

Goalie Zen Wiggins didn't need to make any saves for the shutout.

Hilton Head Prep (4-3) plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ridgeland-Hardeeville.


Hilton Head Christian Academy 6, First Baptist 0: Hannah Reynolds scored two goals and had an assist to spark the Eagles.

Lexi Lainhart, Audrey Bensch, Alyssa Lane and Kellee Vest each had a goal, and Allison Meeder had two assists.

Meaghan Gillis and Logan Cherry split time in goal for Hilton Head Christian (8-3 overall, 4-2 region), combining for one save.

The Eagles host Whale Branch at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Hilton Head Prep 4, St. Andrew's 0: The Dolphins got one goal apiece from Catherine Sheehan, Foster Willey, Abby Kandel and Megan Frederick to bring their record to .500 on the year.

Emily Lacombe was credited with the shutout in net for Hilton Head Prep (3-3), which plays again at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ridgeland-Hardeeville.


Hilton Head Island 17, Orangeburg-Wilkinson 2: Adam Orischak and Aaron Facenda had three hits and three RBIs apiece as the Seahawks rolled past the visiting Bruins.

Brandon Johnson had two hits and two RBIs for Hilton Head Island, now 7-0 overall and 4-0 in Region 8-AAA.

Winning pitcher Ryan Cherry was the first of five pitchers to take the mound for Hilton Head Island.

The Seahawks continue their homestand Monday against Hanahan.

Summerville 2, Beaufort High 1: Pinch-hitter Andrew Smyth hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning to pull the Eagles within a run, but was left stranded on base to end the game.

Carson Gregory was the hard-luck loser, giving up two unearned runs in six innings. He gave up four hits and had three strikeouts.

Beaufort High (3-5 overall, 1-1 Region 8-AAAA) hosts Ashley Ridge at 7 p.m. Monday.

Battery Creek 11, Ridgeland-Hardeeville 0 (5 innings): Zach Mahan and Craig Capano combined on a two-hit shutout, and Jack Morgan went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs to lead the Dolphins to victory.

Mahan got the win, striking out five in three innings. Capano had three strikeouts in two innings.

Clyde Parker hit a triple for Battery Creek.

Thomas Heyward Academy 3, Dorchester Academy 2: Ryan Day had 10 strikeouts in a complete-game three-hitter to lead the Rebels to the win.

Day walked no one and gave up no earned runs. He also went 1 for 2 at the plate with a run and an RBI.

Seth Jones was 1 for 2 with a run scored, and JD Tuten was 1 for 2 with a stolen base for Thomas Heyward (4-4), which hosts Colleton Prep at 6:30 p.m. Monday.


Hilton Head Island High 16, Orangeburg-Wilkinson 0 (3 innings): Whitney Halley pitched an abbreviated no-hitter and went 2 for 2 with three RBIs to help the Seahawks pick up an easy win.

Aileen Moore had a home run and two RBIs while catching her third no-hitter of the year.

Caitlin Buckalew went 2 for 3 and Dori Fitzhugh was 2 for 2 for the Seahawks (4-6 overall, 4-0 Region 8-AAA), who play at 7 p.m. Monday at home against Hanahan.

Summerville 4, Beaufort High 1: Beaufort High managed seven hits and made plenty of contact, but was only able to plate one run in a loss to Region 8-AAAA foe Summerville.

Michelle Brown singled, stole a base and scored on Natalie Moore's sacrifice fly for the Eagles' only run.

Brown and Maddie Berry each went 2 for 3 for Beaufort High (14-4 overall, 1-1 region), and pitcher Jenny Mullins gave up one earned run on five hits. She had five strikeouts and two walks.

"We proved we can play with Summerville, we just didn't do it tonight," Beaufort High coach Doug Plank said. "They are a very good ball team."

The Eagles play at Ashley Ridge on Monday.

JV: Summerville 5, Beaufort High 4

Thomas Heyward Academy 14, Dorchester Academy 2: Brielle Jungblut went 4 for 4 with two doubles and a triple, driving in two runs and scoring four times, as the Rebels coasted to the road win.

Taylor Ernestine, Morgan Peeple and Hanna Cannon each had two hits for Thomas Heyward, and senior Kayla Sanders went 1 for 1.

Selice Daley and Ernestine split pitching duties.

The Rebels (7-5) next visit Colleton Prep on Wednesday.
