Prep Notebook, March 22: Hilton Head High goalie chooses Newberry

Hilton Head Island High School goalkeeper Conner Goulet is headed to Newberry.

The Seahawks standout's recent commitment makes him the second of Wayne Quinlan's starters to head to the college level next season, as midfielder Chris MacMurray signed with Georgia Southern in February.

Goulet, who replaced Mike Ritterbeck in goal this year, has excelled in his first season as the full-time starter. He has helped lead the Seahawks to an early 7-2 mark and No. 5 ranking in Class 3-A.

Hilton Head High has posted shutouts in three of its last four games, with the exception coming in a 2-1 defeat at James Island on March 15. The Seahawks slipped past Cardinal Newman 1-0 on Saturday before cruising past Region 8-AAA foe Orangeburg-Wilkinson 11-0 on Tuesday.

Newberry posted just a 4-11-1 record in 2012, including an 0-8 mark in the South Atlantic Conference. But the Wolves graduated just three seniors from that roster, and coach Barry Slagle, entering his third year with the program, likely has bigger expectations for 2013.

The offers continue to roll in for two of the Lowcountry's biggest football prospects.

Hilton Head Island 2014 defensive tackle Poona Ford picked up an offer from Northern Illinois on Thursday morning. The 6-foot-1 product, who drew rave reviews at last weekend's Orlando Nike Football Training Camp, has now seen his offer sheet grow to 17 schools. South Carolina and Tennessee continue to lead for the 285-pound tackle.

Bluffton 2015 defensive end Shameik Blackshear, meanwhile, picked up a recent offer from Florida State. Coach Jimbo Fisher delivered the news personally to Blackshear, who will visit both FSU and Florida during the weekend of April 6. He'll do so with teammate K.J. Ford, a 2014 defensive tackle prospect, who will also take a visit to N.C. State this weekend. The Bobcats standout is still awaiting his first FBS offer.
