Thomas Heyward Academy 48, Bible Baptist 38: The Thomas Heyward Academy girls basketball team claimed the SCISAA Region 1-AA tournament championship Friday night in Ridgeland, defeating Bible Baptist, 48-38.
"It was a really well-balanced, all-around game," Rebels coach Gary Mazzanna said.
Thomas Heyward (22-2) hasn't lost a region game in two years and hasn't lost a home game since Jan. 14, 2011.
Tournament MVP Jamie Malphrus led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Brielle Jungblut added 13 points, six assists and three steals, and Taylor Ernestine had eight points, three steals and three assists. Both were named to the all-tournament team.
"Ernestine really stepped up and handled the ball well," Mazzanna said.
Cheyanne Gray chipped in with six points and nine rebounds.
"Cheyanne did a nice job on the boards and picked up some garbage baskets to keep them honest," Mazzanna said.
Lyndsey Conley led Bible Baptist with 11 points. Conley and teammate Alyssa Whitford also made the all-tournament team.
Hilton Head Christian Academy 41, Porter-Gaud 38: Macee Tamminen scored 18 points to help the Hilton Head Christian Academy girls basketball team hold off Porter-Gaud, 41-38, on Friday night in Charleston.
Hilton Head Christian (18-10 overall, 8-4 SCISAA Region 3-AAA), which led 17-13 at halftime, won despite playing without leading scorer Ziarre Doe. She sprained her wrist in a recent loss to Northwood Academy, but Eagles coach Kenny Conroy is hoping to have her back on the floor by the time the SCISAA playoffs begin next week.
Monica Bundy finished with nine points, and Francesca Guidobono added seven. Hannah Reynolds had three points, and Audrey Bensch and Andy Anderson scored two apiece for Hilton Head Christian, which hosts Beaufort Academy on Tuesday in the regular-season finale.
Freshman Garis Grant scored 19 points to lead Porter-Gaud.
First Baptist 49, Hilton Head Prep 35: The Dolphins trailed by five at halftime and weren't able to catch up, falling to First Baptist in Charleston.
Sam McCracken scored 10 points to lead Hilton Head Prep (13-11 overall, 2-7 SCISAA Region 3-AAA). Shaun Topper added eight points, John Eck had eight rebounds, and Randy Young and Cole Gardocki each grabbed five rebounds.
Hilton Head Prep plays at Northwood Academy at 3:30 p.m. today.
JV: First Baptist 38, Hilton Head Prep 32
Porter-Gaud 70, Hilton Head Christian 51: Michael Preddy scored 15 points and K.J. James added 12 as Porter-Gaud remained undefeated in SCISAA Region 3-AAA. The Cyclones are 19-3 overall and 9-0 in the region.
Brad Meccariello led the Eagles with 21 points. Caleb Lewis added nine for Hilton Head Christian (9-13 overall, 2-8 SCISAA Region 3-AAA), which ends its regular season Tuesday, hosting Beaufort Academy.
Charleston Collegiate 86, Bible Baptist 47: Top-seeded Charleston Collegiate cruised to victory in the SCISAA Region 1-AA championship game at Thomas Heyward Academy in Ridgeland.
Thomas Heyward's Dylan Tillotson was named to the all-tournament team.
