Hilton Head Island High School beat Beaufort High, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon in a girls tennis match that just as easily could have gone the other way.
The Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches -- won by Seahawks Jennifer Oliver and Logan Danzell, respectively -- each went to tiebreakers, and the No. 4 match, won by Beaufort High's Addie Everidge, saw both sets go to tiebreakers.
"I think it's awesome that we have such good competition in district, even though they're 4-A and we're 3-A," Hilton Head Island coach Jennifer Weitekamper said. "It helps both of us. It was close when we played there as well, and the girls get some hitting in. It makes Beaufort County tennis stronger.
"I think both Coach (David) Reidmeyer and I have agreed that we'll play each other every year, and it helps both schools. In the region, we're the farthest away from everyone, so the only way to get in good play is to play the 4-A schools like Beaufort or play in tournaments like the one at Bishop England."
The Seahawks (9-1) are home at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Region 8-AAA foe James Island. Already 4-0 in the region, Weitekamper likes where the Seahawks are headed.
"I've got a good team earlier on than usual right now," she said, "even though I've got a lot of younger players this year."
Beaufort High falls to 8-4 with the loss.
