Prep Roundup, May 8: Simonsen leads Beaufort High at Lower State golf meet

Class 4-A Lower State: Beaufort High School earned its ticket to next week's state championships with a fifth-place finish Monday at the Class 4-A Lower State meet at Sunset Country Club in Sumter.

South Aiken tore up the course to the tune of a 294 team score, good enough to claim top honors by six strokes over defending state champion Fort Dorchester.

Junior Ryan Anderson, who has committed to play at the College of Charleston, shot an even-par 70 to pace the Thoroughbred squad.

North Augusta's Matt Nesmith, the state's No.1 rated junior golfer who has earned a University of South Carolina scholarship, shot 67 for the low round of the day. Other low scorers included Beaufort High's Taylor Simonsen and Lexington's Bryce Miley, who both shot 71, and Ashley Ridge's Connor O'Rourke, who had 72.

Rounding out the scorers for Beaufort High were Tommy Earl, who shot 75 to finished fifth overall, Josh Fickes, who shot 78, Joel Fickes, who had 90, and Kevin Feltner, who posted 107.

Joining Beaufort High, South Aiken and Fort Dorchester at the state tournament in Furman will be Lexington (302), North Augusta (311), Wando (314), Ashley Ridge (316) and West Florence (319).


Cardinal Newman 9, Hilton Head Prep 2: Colin White had both goals for the Dolphins in their playoffs loss to the state's top-ranked team.

Logan Clark and Dylan Clark each picked up an assist for Hilton Head Prep.

Goalkeeper Zen Wiggins had 26 saves.

The Dolphins finished with an 11-6 record.
