Hilton Head Prep, Thomas Heyward head to Sumter for shot at state title

Hilton Head Prep and Thomas Heyward Academy are six wins away from ending their volleyball seasons with state titles -- and two losses away from ending them empty-handed.

The Class 3-A Dolphins open play today with the Class 2-A Rebels to follow tomorrow in the double-elimination SCISAA state volleyball tournament at the Sumter County Exhibition Center.

The Dolphins are the No. 3 seed in the upper bracket and will open play at 1:45 p.m. against No. 6 seed Florence Christian. The winner will face No. 2 seed Hammond School in the second round at 3:05 p.m. Porter-Gaud is the top seed in the upper bracket, while Ashley Hall is the top seed in the lower bracket.

The Rebels are the No. 5 seed in the Class 2-A lower bracket and open the tournament at 12:20 p.m. Friday against No. 4 seed Richard Winn. Holly Hill is the top seed in the bracket and likely awaits the winner. Spartanburg Christian is the No. 1 seed in the upper bracket.

The tournament continues Saturday with the Class 2-A and Class 3-A championship matches scheduled for Tuesday.
