The Bluffton High School girls golf team moved a step closer to its goal of claiming a second state title in three years Monday, as the Bobcats won the Class 3-A Lower State championship and qualified for next week's state tournament.
Led by senior Sammie Buchanan's 3-under-par 69, which included a blistering 32 on the front nine, the Bobcats posted a team score of 303 at Sumter's Beech Creek Golf Club.
Bluffton edged Chapin by two shots for the title. Hilton Head High was third at 320. The top eight teams qualified for the 36-hole state tournament Monday and Tuesday at Quail Creek Golf Club in Conway.
Kylie Nizolek (76), Brandi Hammonds (78), Kasidy Beckel (80) and Hayley Trimmer (99) rounded out Bluffton's lineup.
Lily Bartell led the Seahawks with a 72, followed by Jackie Budidharma (73), Nathalie Lezcano (81), Meredith Langs (94) and Meredith Wipper (119).
Hilton Head Prep 3, St. Andrew's 0: In the last home match of their careers, seniors Mackenzie Brown, Liz Buterbaugh and Sarah Hancock led the Dolphins to a 25-13, 25-11, 25-7 sweep of Saint Andrew's.
Buterbaugh sparked Prep with 12 kills and two blocks, Brown added five kills, two aces and four digs and Hancock recorded two aces and a dig.
The Dolphins (22-12) complete the regular season today, joining Hilton Head High in a tri-meet at Bluffton.
Cathedral Academy 3, Thomas Heyward 0: The Rebels lost in a sweep on the road, with Cathedral Academy prevailing 25-20, 25-14, 25-13.
Ashlie Layman had 11 kills, three blocks, two assists and two digs for the Rebels. Andrea Daring chipped in nine assists, three kills and two digs, Taylor Ernestine had a 10-for-10 serving performance along with three assists and two digs, and Chandler Cook contributed five digs.
VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS
HHCA 7, Whale Branch 0: Hilton Head Christian Academy senior Addy Bensch earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles in her last tennis match as an Eagle.
Other HHCA players who didn't drop a game were Molly Lucci, Meredith Inglis, Abby Bensch, Allison Foster and Lindy Maxey.
The Eagles finished 4-8.
Williamsburg County 5, Beaufort Academy 4: The Eagles' season came to an end in the opening round of the postseason.
The teams split the six singles matches, with the winners taking two of three in doubles.
