Prep Roundup, Sept. 25: Beaufort Academy swimmers win state relay title

Beaufort Academy's boys 200-yard freestyle team brought home the gold from the SCISAA state meet for the second year in a row, helping the Eagles finish third in the Class 1-A/2-A team standings Saturday in Augusta, Ga.

Billy Dailey, Finn Koppernaes, Michael Bible and Preston Suber teamed up for the second straight season to finish first in the 200 free relay, clocking a winning time of 1 minute, 41.7 seconds. Dailey, Koppernaes and Suber also joined with Grant Hetherington to take third in the 400 free relay, and Suber captured an individual bronze in the 100 freestyle.

Overall, the Beaufort Academy boys had 14 top-10 finishes.

The Beaufort Academy girls had 13 top-10s, led by Madeleine Gray and Katherine Neal. They teamed with Laura Roddey and Casey Kahn to take third in the 400 free relay. Neal also took third in the 100 freestyle, and Gray was the bronze medalist in the 200 individual medley.

Beaufort Academy finished fourth in the Class 1-A/2-A girls standings. Hilton Head Christian Academy's girls were ninth in Class 3-A, with seven top-10 finishes.

The Hilton Head Christian boys were 10th in Class 3-A, but Charlie Guenther had a second-place finish for the Eagles in the 100 breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:09.61.

Hilton Head Prep 5, Porter-Gaud 4: The Dolphins and Cyclones split the six singles matches during Saturday's match in Charleston -- with Hilton Head Prep winning the top three -- but Prep pulled out the victory with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

CROSS COUNTRY

Battery Creek: The Dolphins competed in the 17-school Effingham County (Ga.) Oktoberfest meet. Erik Barbosa led the Battery Creek boys with a 17th-place finish in a time of 18 minutes, 55 seconds. Alexis Miller was the top Creek girl, placing 22nd in 24:02. The Dolphins run again Oct. 8 in the Sandhills Invitational.
