Less than a month after hiring him, Hilton Head Prep has parted ways with football coach Alex Marx.
Headmaster Anthony Kandel confirmed in an email that Marx is no longer with the school, saying, "It was simply not the right fit." Kandel's email also said Kevin Orford has been named head coach.
Marx declined to comment on the situation and referred all questions to his attorney, John Bowen, who also declined to comment.
On April 29, Kandel announced Marx's hire as head football coach and director of facilities, two positions Ron Peduzzi had held until he and the school parted in mid-April.
At that time, Kandel said Marx previously had impressed school officials when interviewing for a job as a teacher and assistant football coach and touted the fact that Marx had volunteered his time to travel from New Jersey to spend two weeks running the Dolphins' spring practices.
Those practices were scheduled to conclude last week.
Orford had been named an assistant coach on Marx's staff, but now he becomes the third person to hold Prep's head coaching post in six weeks.
"We were very fortunate to have an assistant coach on staff who was ready, eager and qualified to lead our program," Kandel said in his email. "Kevin has been associated with the program, has tremendous passion for and knowledge of the game, is a superb role model for our young men, has a love for our school and believes deeply that his primary responsibility is to the boys that he has been tasked to lead, develop and support."
Orford could not be reached for comment Monday.
