Some familiar faces will roam the sidelines in some rather unfamiliar places this fall.
Hilton Head High and Bluffton High School have revamped a portion of their respective coaching staffs during their spring practice sessions over the past two weeks -- and their head coaches say the changes will stick for the fall season.
Ron Peduzzi has joined Hilton Head High's coaching staff as its defensive coordinator. Peduzzi coached Hilton Head Prep for 10 seasons before he and the school parted ways last month.
Seahawks head coach Tim Singleton said Peduzzi's fiery personality has been a welcome fit to his team, which struggled defensively during last year's 4-6 season.
Peduzzi's last public school stop was also Hilton Head High, where he coached the offensive line for Dan Utley in 2000. He previously was an assistant at Battery Creek for three years.
"Real excited. Real happy to be coaching," Peduzzi said. "I'm looking forward to it. We've got some good football players, too."
Peduzzi will replace longtime defensive coordinator Howard Merrick, who has crossed the bridge to be one of the many new faces on Bluffton's staff.
The Bobcats have added five coaches, head coach Ken Cribb said. Chris Harrison (secondary), Joshua Poole (linebackers), Alan Dunson (receivers) and Fred Pinciaro (kickers) will also join Cribb's staff.
"We've added some great talent," Cribb said. "It's a good time for Bluffton football."
All five Beaufort County public schools will have spring games in the next two days to conclude multi-week spring practice sessions. Hilton Head High, Bluffton, Battery Creek and Whale Branch will hold their spring games tonight, and Beaufort High has scheduled its for 11 a.m. Saturday.
The Bobcats plan to play their spring game as if it is a regular-season matchup, Cribb said. Admission is free, though donations are welcome. Early-bird 2011-12 sports passes will be on sale at the game at discounted prices, athletics director Dave Adams said. The postgame show will include a live band.
