Prep Roundup, May 3: HHH golf team wins region meet

The Hilton Head High boys golf team, led by Tate Hoisington, cruised to victory Tuesday in the Region 7-AAA championships at Planters Row Golf Course in Port Royal Plantation on Hilton Head Island.

The match took place between Hilton Head High School, Bluffton High School, Berkeley High School, and Cane Bay High School.

The Seahawks finished with a team score of 310. Bluffton was second at 339, followed by Berkeley with 348 and Cane Bay at 430. All four teams will move on to play in the Lower State tournament on Monday at Darlington Country Club.

Hoisington was the region medalist, carding a 1-under-par 71. Teammate Chris O'Donnell had a 77, Phillip North and Brooks Moody both shot 81, and Troy Hoisington finished with an 82.

Bluffton's Alec Weary had the second best score on the day, leading the Bobcats with a 75. Wesley Long came in with a 77, Jake Rapp shot a 90, Shane Fox finished with a 93 and Pierce Brehany had a 95 for Bluffton.

VARSITY BOYS TENNIS

Beaufort High 5, White Knoll 1: The Eagles easily advanced to the second round with a victory over White Knoll. Malcolm Kates led the way with a win at No. 1 singles. It was the 98th career victory for the junior, who is 14-1 on the season. James Bachety won at No. 2 singles, improving to 13-2 on the year, and Alex Angus scored a win at No. 5 singles for the Eagles, winning the second set 6-0 without losing a single point.

The Eagles (13-2) play again Thursday against either James Island or Carolina Forest.

VARSITY BASEBALL

Bluffton 6, Berkeley 3 (Monday): The Bobcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead, and Ryan Cherry made it stand up with a one-hit complete game to keep Bluffton alive in the double-elimination Class 3-A district playoffs.

Cherry walked nine but allowed just one single and three unearned runs. He struck out seven.

Eric Boyles went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored to lead Bluffton's offense. Michael Grant was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run, and B.J. Kitty was 2 for 3 with a double.

The Bobcats will travel to Darlington today for the district championship. Bluffton must win twice to advance to the Lower State tournament. The first game begins at 5:30 p.m.

VARSITY BOYS SOCCER

Battery Creek 3, Hardeeville 1: William Lopez scored twice and Christopher Kokot added another goal as the Dolphins took down the Hurricanes.

Rodney Cooper had two assists and Manny Gonzalez had the other for Battery Creek (10-7). Lopez and Manuel Mejia combined for 12 saves for the Dolphins, who host Bluffton at 7 p.m. Thursday in a makeup game.

Hardeeville keeper Jose Zambrano made 14 saves. Adrian Manzales scored the Hurricanes' goal.

Fort Dorchester 3, Beaufort High 1: The Eagles suffered their first loss of the season in Region 8-AAAA. Andrew Settlemire scored on a free kick early in second half to tie game at 1-1, but the Patriots pulled away.

Nick Manos made six saves for the Eagles (14-2 overall, 6-1 region), who are still a game ahead of Fort Dorchester in the region.

The Eagles host Colleton County at 7 p.m. Friday for their senior night.

Orangeburg Prep 2, Hilton Head Christian 1: Josh Mousseau scored the lone goal for the Eagles, who host Pinewood Prep on Friday.

VARSITY GIRLS SOCCER

Beaufort High 5, Fort Dorchester 4: Hailey Conners and Molly Murphy scored two goals apiece and Amber Gaither had the other as the Eagles improved to 6-1 in Region 8-AAAA.

Kaile Vuyk assisted on two of the goals and Amanda Conners had another assist for Beaufort High (10-4 overall). Kayla King made five saves in goal for the Eagles, who play at Colleton County at 7 p.m. Friday.

Hilton Head Prep 12, St. Andrew's 0: Led by seniors Lane Czura, Kathleen Blum and Taylor Clark, the Dolphins wrapped up their regular season in dominant fashion.

Czura scored four goals and Blum had three. Mackenzie Brown added two goals, while Halie Parker, Amber Erkan and Sophia Duesberg had the others. Grace Anderson recorded the shutout for Prep (12-2 overall, 10-2 region), which will open the SCISAA playoffs next Tuesday.

SPEED AND STRENGTH

SCISAA state meet (Saturday): Thomas Heyward Academy's Logan Mock and Ryan Day won their respective weight classes at Saturday's meet in Sumter. Mock won the 145-pound class for the third straight year. Day claimed his second straight title with the victory at 160.

The overall title is determined by a competitor's performance in a combination of six events: bench press, power clean, 40-yard dash, pro agility run, vertical jump and standing broad jump.
