Prep Roundup, March 12: Beaufort boys win Diamond Hornet meet

TRACK AND FIELD

Diamond Hornet Invitational: The Beaufort High boys won the meet at Lower Richland High School, registering 17 place-winning performances. Spartanburg took second and Irmo was third.

The Eagles won the 4x100-meter relay with D'vonte Cohen, Desmond Howard, Akeem Smalls and Theodore Aiken. Howard was second in the 400, Smalls was second in the 200, DeAndre Jefferson Fields was second in the discus and the Eagles also took second in the 4x800 and 4x400.

Beaufort High's girls had a pair of first-place finishes. Deja Jackson won the shot put with a distance of 36 feet, 11 inches, and Madeline Aune cleared 10 feet to win the pole vault.

The Battery Creek boys and girls teams earned top-10 finishes in the 22-team meet.

Jamario Williams led the Battery Creek boys, posting a third-place finish in the 200 meters and a fifth in the 100. The Dolphins also placed third in the 4x400 relay.

Tatiara Collins had the Battery Creek girls' top finish, taking fourth in the triple jump.

Beaufort High's next meet is Wednesday at Summerville. Battery Creek will be in action next Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla., at the Bob Hayes Invitational.

VARSITY BASEBALL

Trinity Christian 13, Hilton Head Prep 12: The squad from Dublin, Ga., finished Prep's Dolphin Diamond Classic undefeated, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth and holding Prep to one run in the seventh for the win.

The host Dolphins (3-3) were led at the plate by John Sheehan, who was 3 for 5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, and Patrick Briody, who went 3 for 3 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Dylan Powell was 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs.

The Dolphins host Thomas Heyward at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Trinity Christian 7, Hilton Head Christian 5: Kevin Campbell was 2 for 3 with two stolen bases and an RBI, and Reese Dolyniuk went 2 for 3 with an RBI, but the Eagles came up on the short end in the Dolphin Diamond Classic.

Andrew Halley started and took the loss, giving up one earned run in three innings. He struck out seven.

The Eagles (2-3) went 1-2 in the tournament. They play Tuesday at Northwood Academy in their region opener.

Hilton Head Christian 15, Shiloh Hills Christian 0 (1 inn.): Every Eagles starter scored a run in a game at the Dolphin Diamond Classic that didn't even make it out of the first inning before the mercy rule took effect.

J.D. Reichel was 2 for 2 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs, and Kevin Campbell was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Alex Cooler added a hit and two RBIs for the Eagles.

Beaufort High 5, Midland Valley 4: Beau Brown had a pair of doubles and two RBIs to lead the Eagles (5-1), and Weber Pike was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Mark Jones earned the win, pitching three scoreless innings of relief. Starter Luke Smith gave up two earned runs in four innings for Beaufort High, which hosts Wando at 6 p.m. Monday.

Bluffton 10, Colleton County 0 (5 inn.): C. Grunder earned the win, striking out six in going the distance. He gave up one hit. Wade Villanueva, M. Grant and Travis Ramsey had two RBIs each for the Bobcats (6-1).

Bluffton 10, Bleckley County, Ga., 9 (Friday): Hunter VanGeison and K. Mitchell had three hits apiece to lead the Bobcats to the road win. Mitchell, Wade Villanueva and Eric Boyles each had two RBIs. Ryan Ward got the win.

VARSITY GIRLS SOCCER

Brookland-Cayce 2, Hilton Head High 1: The Seahawks suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 4-1-1. Brookland-Cayce improved to 3-2-1.

VARSITY BOYS SOCCER

Brookland-Cayce 2, Hilton Head High 1 (OT): Jalin Butler scored the game-winner for Brookland-Cayce (5-1-1). Herbert Cojulun also scored for the hosts.

Ruben Romero's goal in the 40th minute was the Seahawks' only score. Mike Ritterbeck made four saves for Hilton Head High (3-3-1).
