Whether he likes it or not -- and he says he doesn't mind -- Michael Brewer may have his running career at Hilton Head High defined by one very unique story.
As a junior at the Class 3-A cross country state meet, an opposing runner stepped on the heel of Brewer's shoe, causing it to slip off his foot. Rather than stopping to pick it up -- and costing himself valuable time -- Brewer ran the last two miles of the state meet on just one shoe.
And, oh, by the way, he still finished in the top 20 and helped the Seahawks earn the first of back-to-back state championships.
His coach, Bill Wrightson, said Brewer showed perseverance in overcoming such a unique challenge.
So it should come as no shock that Brewer seems prepared for his next challenge -- the Seahawks' all-state runner signed a letter of intent Friday to attend The Citadel, where he will compete for the men's cross country team and its track team.
"The fraternity between team members is unlike anything else," Brewer said. "I'm looking forward to having the chance to continue that. When you're running, you can do it to have fun and try to get better. It's a great thing to do."
