The season ended -- and so did eight seniors' careers -- when Hilton Head Prep's boys basketball team lost to top-seeded Heathwood Hall, 67-60, in the SCISAA Class 3-A quarterfinals Wednesday in Sumter.
The Dolphins (18-9) struggled to get their offense going in the first half, and the result was a 20-point deficit in the third quarter. Hilton Head Prep scrambled back within seven, but couldn't get any closer.
"We had our chances; we just ran out of gas," Prep coach Rich Basirico said. "Our kids never gave up. They continued to play hard."
Prep's seniors led the comeback effort, as Matt Layman finished his career with 26 points and four rebounds, Alex Orford added 13 points and five rebounds and Patrick Andrews had eight points and four rebounds.

"They left it all on the court, and that's all we can ask for," Basirico said. "They gave us their energy and their effort right up to the end."
Heathwood Hall advances to the semifinals to play Laurence Manning, which beat Porter-Gaud by one point Wednesday.
