Hilton Head High's three-year run as Class 3-A Lower State wrestling champions came to an end Monday, when Chapin beat the Seahawks 58-3, knocking them out of the postseason in the second round.
Richard Jenkins (125 pounds) gave Hilton Head High its only win of the night against Chapin, the top-ranked team in the Lower State. Chapin will wrestle St. James, which defeated Battery Creek 35-30 on Monday, for the Lower State championship Wednesday.
"Chapin is loaded, top to bottom," Newton said. "We tried to bump people all over the place to take a chance to win, which kept the score from being as close as it could have been. But we came up here and took our shot -- we had to take chances all over the place."
The Seahawks won the Lower State title in 2008, 2009 and 2010 before losing in the state finals each season. They reclaimed the Region 7-AAA title this year with an undefeated conference mark.
The Lower State individual championships are scheduled for Feb. 18-19 at Bluffton High School. The top four finishers in each weight class will qualify for the individual state finals the following weekend.
"The last three years, we've been so detailed with dual playoffs -- now, we have an extra week to get ready for individuals," Newton said. "We'll get a lot more one-on-one time with the kids, and we think we have a few guys that could win it all."
