Bluffton, Battery Creek set for key region battle tonight

Before the start of the Region 7-AAA basketball season, Bluffton High School boys coach Brett Macy promised an unpredictable year.

Judging by the first portion of the league's schedule, it looks as if the Bobcats may provide all the drama themselves.

The Bobcats are 2-1 through three region contests -- all three have been decided by five points or less, and two have gone to overtime. Berkeley handed Bluffton its first region loss, 58-53, in overtime Tuesday. The Stags came from 13 points behind for their first region win, and the teams traded leads seven times in the last 12 minutes.

Bluffton looks to get back on track tonight when it hosts Battery Creek, also 2-1 in Region 7-AAA, and Macy expects another down-to-the-wire finish.

"We have to be tough in tight games because almost every single one of our games will be tight," Macy said.

Tonight's matchup, which will be preceded by the girls game at 6 p.m., may prove key in determining playoff seeds and maybe even the region's champion. The Bobcats and Dolphins are two of four teams tied for the conference lead, along with Cane Bay and Lake Marion.

Battery Creek coach Antoine Youmans said he thinks the Dolphins can defend the region's title, which they won a year ago.

"I think we match up pretty well with everyone in the region," he said.

In other Region 7-AAA action, Berkeley visits Hilton Head High. The Seahawks boys squad is still searching for its first region victory. The girls game at Hilton Head High will tip off at 6 p.m.

The Hilton Head High and Bluffton girls teams are tied for the region lead with 3-0 marks. The rivals will meet for the first time at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Hilton Head High.
