Battery Creek hosts tournament today, Saturday

Battery Creek High School will honor a former coach for a second year when it hosts the second annual Coach Trap Memorial Wrestling Tournament.

Camillio Trapuzzano, a longtime coach at Thomas Heyward Academy and Battery Creek, died in December 2009. Trapuzzano was known for coaching Thomas Heyward to five consecutive softball state titles during the 1990s. The Battery Creek Duals were renamed last season for the inaugural memorial event.

Nine teams will wrestle in three pools today and Saturday. The teams will be pooled again after today's matches.

Among the local draws are Beaufort High, Hilton Head High, Whale Branch and the host Dolphins. Among the top teams will be Eastside and West Oak, ranked third and fourth, respectively, in Class 3-A. Bamberg-Ehrhardt, the top-ranked team in Class 1-A according to scmat.com, also is competing.

"We've got a lot of good teams coming in," first-year Battery Creek coach Kyle Kimrey said. "It should be a fun weekend."

Challenge matches will be held Saturday morning to allow teams not wrestling each other in pools to face off. Today, Pool A will include West Oak, Beaufort High and St. James. Pool B will include Eastside, Battery Creek and Colleton County. Pool C will feature Hilton Head High, Bamberg-Ehrhardt and Whale Branch.
