Prep notebook: Beaufort Academy players named to 8-man all-region team

Five Beaufort Academy football players have been selected for the SCISAA 8-man all-region team. Nathan Akers, Matthew Bass, Bennett Fultz, Jack Griffith and Gibson Achurch all made the team.

Akers, Bass and Fultz were also selected to play in the SCISAA 8-man North-South all-star game on Dec. 4 at Patrick Henry Academy in Estill. Wheatley Alford will coach the South team.

Bass finished the season with 112 tackles and five fumble recoveries, Fultz had 64 tackles and four fumble recoveries and Griffith had 95 tackles and five fumble recoveries. Akers had 1,541 all-purpose yards and Achurch threw for 1,387 yards.


Seven area volleyball players were named to the Region 5-A team this week. Whale Branch, which took third place in the region behind Branchville and Allendale-Fairfax, and Ridgeland each landed three players on the team, and Hardeeville added one.

Vanessa Scott, Deborah Fields and Jamie Whalen were selected for Whale Branch; Brittany Ford, Brittany Richardson and April Jenkins were selected for the Jaguars; and Candice Life was the lone member of the Hurricanes' squad to make the team.

Allendale-Fairfax star Na'Stasha Bates was named the Region 5-A Player of the Year, and Ron Nester of Branchville was awarded the Region 5-A Coach of the Year.
