Beaufort High scores 'special' win at West Ashley, 34-0

CHARLESTON -- Beaufort High took advantage of four West Ashley turnovers to roll over the homestanding Wildcats, 34-0, at Wildcat Stadium on Friday.

The special teams for the Eagles were just that, as they returned punts for 75 and 90 yards. One of the returns was for a score, while the 75-yarder set up Beaufort (4-1) for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Beaufort coach Mark Clifford liked what he saw of his special teams.

"I thought we were a little sloppy tonight," Clifford said. "But our special teams, particularly the punt return squad, played extremely well."

The Eagles took the kickoff and promptly drove 76 yards in seven plays, with tailback Alex Simmons rumbling for 33 yards to give them a 7-0 lead.

Interceptions killed West Ashley's first two drives, as both Karon Eady and Thomas Woodhead threw picks. Woodhead's interception led directly to a Beaufort score, as Josh McPherson scored from 37 yards to make it 14-0 early in the second quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Wildcats' David Campbell returned the kick 42 yards. After a 15-yard facemask penalty set up the Wildcats at the Eagles' 38-yard line, West Ashley stalled.

Beaufort's JaClay Mixon returned the ensuing punt 75 yards to the Wildcat 10, and quarterback Beau Brown ran it in on the next play to make it 20-0.

West Ashley (2-3) appeared ready to score late in the half, driving to the Beaufort 3 with 34 seconds left. But on fourth down, Jared Mole lost a yard on a pitchout.

After the Wildcats' first possession of the second half, the Eagles' Luke Smith gathered in a Woodhead punt at his own 10 and raced almost untouched 90 yards to make it 27-0.

The Wildcats had one last chance to score, driving to the Beaufort 1 with just under six minutes left in the game. But on second and goal, Mole fumbled into the end zone and the Eagles recovered for a touchback.

"I have to admit, we were happy with the shutout," Clifford said.

McPherson led the way for the Eagles with 84 yards on 10 carries. Brown completed 6 of 10 passes for 77 yards.
