Bluffton residents and Hilton Head Christian Academy teammates Bryson Nimmer and Matt Lehman each shot 3-under-par 67 Tuesday to share the first-round lead of the American Junior Golf Association's IJGA Junior Open with Hilton Head Island's Andrew Orischak, the defending champion.

Nimmer got out to an early lead with four birdies on the front nine and added three on the back. The rising senior tied for third at the 2013 IJGA Junior Open.

Nimmer and Orischak played in the same group off first on No. 1. They will tee off at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday on No. 10.

Lehman will tee off at 9:40 a.m. on the back nine.

"I've played the course a bunch, and I've been playing well recently," Nimmer said. "Playing with guys who are playing well helps a ton, because we're both making birdies, and it's easier to make putts when you see them go in for someone else. The hole just looks bigger."

Orischak won with a 1-under-par 209 at last year's event. He carded four birdies during the first round Tuesday.

"I always love coming here to Chechessee," Orischak said. "It's one of my favorite courses in the area. I didn't have too many expectations about defending coming in, but I just wanted to get off to a good first round. I left a lot out there, but I played well and I think I'm in good position."

Lehman, playing in his second-career AJGA event, rounded out the three-way tie for first. The rising junior made four birdies to earn a spot at the top of the leaderboard heading into the second round.

Sam Warkentin, Philip Loeb and Matthew Plunkett tied for fourth with scores of 2-under-par 68 after 18 holes of the 54-hole event.

In the girls division, Fai Khamborn fired a 4-under-par 66. The Thailand native notched six birdies en route to a three-stroke lead.

Khamborn won her first AJGA event last week, the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior in Ashland, Ky.

"I played okay on the first nine holes, but I started to play better on the back nine and I got excited and got more confidence," Khambron said. "Winning last week gave me confidence going into this tournament."
