Local golf roundup/notebook: Nimmer falls to 2nd at SCGA Junior

Bluffton's Bryson Nimmer is two shots back headed into the final round of the S.C. Golf Association Junior Championship.

Nimmer slipped to a 1-over-par 73 in Wednesday's second round after opening with a 6-under 66 at Willow Creek Golf Club in Greer. At 5 under, he trails Columbia's Jack Parrot, who followed an opening-round 69 with a 68 and is 7 under.

Nimmer made birdies on the par-5 fifth, the par-4 10th and the par-4 13th to go with four bogeys.

Following Wednesday's second round, the field will be cut to the low 48 scores and ties in the older age bracket and the low 10 scores and ties in the Boys 13-14 Division.

The low eight scores of the tournament will automatically qualify for the 39th Annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Team Matches to be played at Ansley Golf Club - Settindown Creek in Roswell, Ga.

The matches are the longest-running interstate matches in the country.

Beaufort's Josh Fickes, the 2013 champion, shot a second-round 80 and is tied for 82nd.

Greenville's Carly Burkhardt and Lexington's Lauren Stephenson are tied at 4-under-par 140 after two rounds of the Women's S.C. Golf Association Junior Girls Championship at Columbia Country Club.

Hilton Head Island's Ted Morris didn't take the ultimate prize at Palmetto Electric Cooperative's 12th Annual Touchstone Energy Million Dollar Hole-in-One Shootout, but he grabbed the best of the rest.

Morris's shot to 9 feet, 8 inches in the finals on May 30 at Old South Golf Links earned him $1,000 cash and a spot in a Las Vegas Pro-Am in October.

According to organizers, the event raised more than $8,000 in support of the Bright Ideas teacher grant program, which provides funding for innovative classroom projects in local schools.

After three days of qualifying, 28 finalists took their shot at a hole-in-one and the $1 million prize. No one has claimed the top prize in the event's 12 years.
