S.C. Open tees off Tuesday at Belfair

For the third time in four years, the South Carolina Open is back in Beaufort County.

After being held last year at Fort Jackson Golf Club in Columbia, the 62nd edition of this Carolinas PGA major event tees off at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning at Belfair Plantation's par-72, 7,111-yard West Course.

The event was held in 2010 and 2011 at the May River Golf Club at Palmetto Bluff.

The Open, one of the oldest Carolinas PGA major tournaments, is a 54-hole stroke play tournament. The 162-player field will be reduced to the low 60 contestants and ties after 36 holes. The Open is also an official 2013 CPGA Bob Boyd Player of the Year Points Challenge event.

The 2012 event was won by Jerry Haas, former PGA Tour golfer, brother of pro golfer Jay Haas and head coach at Wake Forest. Haas isn't in this year's field, but four former champions are -- Charles Frost (2010), Billy Anderson (2009), Steve Isley (2004) and Mike Lawrence (1984, 1987-88).

Before 2003, only S.C. PGA Professionals and amateurs were eligible to play, but the tournament is now open to North and South Carolina PGA Professionals and amateurs, creating a larger, more competitive field.

More than 40 of the golfers in the field have ties to Beaufort or Jasper counties, including 2013 Hilton Head Amateur champion J.D Hoft of Bluffton, Haig Point assistant professional Matt Bova, who played in the RBC Heritage, Moss Creek director of golf Heidi Wright-Tennyson, former USC Beaufort golfer Luke McClellan, Moss Creek head pro Tom Logue, Hilton Head Prep boys golf coach Kyle Maloney and Bluffton's Ben Dietrich, a Hank Haney IJGA product and a University of South Carolina golfer, to name a few.
