USC Beaufort senior goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert earned Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors in voting by the conference's sports information directors on Monday.
Mummert was terrific in goal for the Sand Sharks in three games this week, holding a strong Westminster team to one goal in one half of play before notching two victories over the weekend. She stopped 10 of 11 shots on goal and shut down numerous scoring opportunities with aggressive play coming off her line in a 2-1 OT win over St. Andrews and notched her 11th career shutout with three saves in a 2-0 victory against Talladega.
"Chelsie had a great weekend in the pipes," USCB coach Ed Heberling said in a release. "She showed her old form and was a major reason for our result against St. Andrews."
The senior from Summerville ranks 35th nationally and third in the Sun Conference with 22 saves and has stopped 78.6 percent of shots on goal this season. She has allowed six goals in 345 minutes, 42 seconds, for a goals against average of 1.56.
It's the third Defensive Player of the Week honor for Mummert, who also won the award once in each of the past two seasons.
"As with all individual awards, it comes down to the team performance," Heberling said. "This is a great award for Chelsie and her teammates."
The Sand Sharks (3-2) begin a five-game road trip this week with two games on the West Coast, facing Marymount California at 5 p.m. Wednesday and Antelope Valley at 7 p.m. Friday.
