Vecchio wins 800 to lead Sand Sharks at Chanticleer Classic

The USC Beaufort track and field team set four school records, led by sophomore Anthony Vecchio's first-place performance in the 800 meters, Saturday at the Chanticleer Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina University in Conway.

Vecchio claimed USCB's only individual title, winning the 800 with a time of 1:55.07 to break his own school mark. Freshman Vance White also had a big day, setting a school record while finishing sixth in the 100 meters (11.15) and helping the 4x100 relay team set a school mark of 42.93 seconds, good for a fourth-place finish.

The final school record came from freshman Matthew Chapman, who set the mark in the javelin (124 feet, 5 inches) and placed fourth in his USCB debut.

The top performances on the women's side were fourth-place showings from Pamela Robinson in the 400, Melissa Carder in the 800 and Ashlee Eady in the high jump.

Next up for the Sand Sharks is a trip to Miramar, Fla., for the Sun Conference Championships on April 21 and 22.
