Strong day in Savannah for USC Beaufort track and field team

SAVANNAH -- The University of South Carolina Beaufort track and field team set 12 school records and tied two more Wednesday evening at the Tiger Twilight Relays at Savannah State University. The Sand Shark women set 10 of those records.

Sophomore Ty'Chelle Freeman claimed school records in the discus (32.37m) and hammer throw (28.30m), winning both events. She also won the shot put (12.01m) and was third in the javelin (28.51m).

Freshman Ashlee Eady set records in the 100-meter hurdles (16.20) and the triple jump (9.29m) and was part of the record-setting 4x100 relay team along with Becky Hayden, Ciera Love and Pamela Robinson. Eady placed second in the hurdles and the high jump (1.50m).

Junior Megan Atkinson also claimed an individual title for USCB, winning the javelin (34.08m) with a school-record throw.

School records also fell in the 200 meters (Pamela Robinson, 27.36), 400-meter hurdles (Sarah Turrubiate, 1:16.82), pole vault (Rebekah Herty, 1.82m) and 4x400 relay (Jessica Brown, Robinson, Melissa Carder, Claire Kennedy, 4:17.48). Love tied her own record in the 100 meters (13.41).

On the men's side, Joseph Tanner led the way with school records in the pole vault (2.13m) and javelin (35.32m), and Ricky Williams matched Avery Singleton's school mark while winning the long jump (6.56m).

The Sand Shark men also claimed gold in the 5K (Anthony Vecchio, 16:04.02), shot put (Joshua Roper, 12.26m) and hammer (Ernest White, 18.19m).

Next up for the Sand Sharks is the Chanticleer Classic at Coastal Carolina University on April 13.
