USC Beaufort baseball team scores win at Savannah State, 6-3

SAVANNAH -- Terry McClinton had three hits and three RBIs, and Erik Armstrong added three hits and drove in a run as the University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team went on the road and knocked off NCAA Division I Savannah State, 6-3, on Tuesday.

McClinton opened the scoring in the third with his team-leading fifth triple of the season, a shot down the right-field line that scored Blake Cilwick. McClinton added RBI singles in the sixth and eighth.

The Tigers tied it at 1 on Lee Moore's RBI groundout in the fourth, but Armstrong put USCB ahead for good with a run-scoring groundout in the fifth. Cilwick added an RBI single in the sixth and McClinton followed with his second RBI of the day for a 4-1 advantage.

Savannah State pulled within 5-3 in the eighth, but Kyle Thompson's RBI triple in the ninth gave USCB (17-18) some insurance and senior right-hander Andrew Barrineau got his third save with a scoreless ninth.

Senior left-hander Matthew Graney started on the mound and set the tone with two scoreless innings as seven USCB pitchers combined to hold the Tigers (17-12) to three runs and nine hits. Junior Stephen Richards (1-2) was the winning pitcher. Sophomore right-hander Kutler Lane also pitched two scoreless frames.

The Sand Sharks took a 5-4 lead over the Tigers in the all-time series and have won four of five meetings at Savannah State.

USCB travels to West Palm Beach, Fla., this weekend for a three-game Sun Conference series at Northwood. The series opener is set for 2:30 p.m. Friday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.
