The USC Beaufort men's cross country team finished third Saturday at USC Aiken's Bridgestone-Pacer Invitational. Augusta State won the meet and Flagler was second. USCB was the only NAIA school competing; the rest were NCAA Division II. Marshall Meyer was narrowly beaten in a sprint to the finish line, coming in second with a time of 26 minutes, 33 seconds, which was better than the previous record for the 5-mile course. Other USCB scorers: Frank Tinsley (13th, 27:43), John Critchlow (19th, 28:09), Tommy Reeves (27th, 28:32), Anthony Vecchio (28th, 28:38). "I was pretty pleased," USCB coach Larry Kimball said. "We're on the right track." The USCB men are scheduled to compete again Oct. 1 in Charlotte.
The USC Beaufort women's soccer team remained winless in its inaugural season with a 6-0 loss Saturday to Savannah College of Art and Design in Bluffton. The Sand Sharks (0-6) return to action Thursday at USC Aiken.
