USC Beaufort had all six of its qualified athletes in action Saturday on the final day of the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, and five of them took part in the marathon.
According to USCB coach Larry Kimball, it was their first time attempting a marathon. For first-timers, the Sand Sharks held their own.
Frank Tinsley finished 24th and John Critchlow was 48th in the men's marathon. USCB's Marshall Meyer also competed, but had to drop out of the race at the 12-mile mark because of problems with his hip flexor, Kimball said. Tinsley finished with a time of 2 hours, 44 minutes and 21 seconds. Critchlow came in at 2:56:47.
On the women's side, Selena Hutson took 26th for USCB in a time of 3:19:30. Katie Mock wasn't far behind, placing 30th in the field of 60 runners with a time of 3:23:22.
Shannon Anderson was the other USCB athlete competing at the three-day meet held at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind. Anderson finished 26th in the men's triple jump Saturday with a mark of 13.44 meters.
